The Bayesian Clairvoyant

Synopsis

This isn't a bug. Someone made this happen.

Mio Himuro: a self-taught genius data scientist with nothing but a high school diploma, who worked her way up on skill alone. Aloof and impossible to pin down, she has disastrous people skills. But when it comes to solving interesting problems with technology, no one can beat her.

At the social network where she used to work, she took it upon herself to tear down the logic that delivered scam ads, calling it "ugly," and knocked ten percent off the ad revenue. She was fired on the spot. That is when Ritsu Mikoshiba, the company's top salesman and resident cool prince, who has long had his eye on her, makes his declaration.

"You just focus on the tech. I'll take care of everything else."

Their banner: build a social network without scams. But ideals don't pay the rent, so the two grow their small company by taking on contract work, solving the AI problems other firms have given up on and the big companies' projects gone up in flames. Bugs no one can explain, data that is too perfect, anomalies that make no sense—Mio exposes the "lies" hidden behind them, data and all, with dazzling clarity.

Give her evidence, and she will calmly update any prior. Yet there is one thing she cannot update. Faced with a mountain of evidence of how much Ritsu dotes on her, she somehow files it all under "labor management" or "a blood sugar issue"—

And to crush their ideals, her former employer begins to make its move.
